Childless Muslim men and women are human beings like everyone else. Since the subject of childlessness remains taboo in our Muslim communities, they are ignored. Therefore, we do not know who they are.

Often among these childless Muslims, some seek support. This is not surprising, because living in a pronatalist society and a community that portrays procreation as a religious obligation, isolates and undermines not only mental health, but also spirituality.

CHILDFREE MUSLIMS : COLLECTIVE AMNESIA OR SELECTIVE MEMORY ?

Childfree (without children by choice) would be heresy. At least this is what some preachers have been saying in a growing number of speeches on the subject of childlessness recently. People who are childless by circumstances seem to have the sympathy of preachers: they are still granted the status of Muslims.

Vous connaissez surement la situation qui suit ! Dernièrement, une personne musulmane sans enfant m’a confié avoir reçu dans sa maison un prestataire qui s’est avéré de confession musulmane ; celui-ci pendant les petites conversations d’usage lui a demandé si elle avait des enfants, à sa réponse négative, le prestataire a répliqué que peut-être c’était un bien pour elle.

Se retrouver face à soi-même ! Un vrai défi pour beaucoup de monde ! Être entouré.e de bruits pour éviter cette confrontation c’est l’histoire de la vie d’un grand nombre d’entre nous ; pourtant cette confrontation avec soi constitue la seule porte d’entrée de la spiritualité.  

La vie sans enfant que ce soit par choix ou par circonstance nous force quelque part à entamer notre voyage spirituel plus tôt que les autres. Les questions dites existentielles frappent nécessairement à nos portes sans que des enfants nous servent de distraction ou d’excuse pour ne jamais ouvrir cette porte et nous retrouver avec nous-mêmes.

THE WORD FAMILY – WHAT MEANING?

« Families only », « family friendly », « bring your family », « he/she has a family now! », « come with your family! », « I have my own family  » … You have seen or heard these expressions. These expressions, in our time, discriminate. The reason is simple: the word family regularly refers to a couple with at least one child or a single parent.

WIVES OF THE PROPHET: WOMEN WITHOUT CHILDREN BY CIRCUMSTANCES

Despite the title of « mother of believers, » some Prophet’s wives lived childless.

This expression « mother of believers » comes from the Qur’an (Sura 33 verse: 6). This name makes the wives of the Prophet Muhammad illegitimate as a wife after his death. The term « mother » becomes symbolic.

The prophet’s wives have the status of maternal figures, even if among them some have never given birth. This is sobering: the title of « mother » can be given without childbirth.
